My friend Diane who wrote the book Those Are My Private Parts (www.thosearemyprivateparts.com) knows a girl who finally told of her abuse because of the trial. She asked her mother a question about the trial because she'd seen it on TV, and the mother explained to her what it was about and she said "You mean like xxx does to me?" or something to that effect. There was a similar case I saw reported in the national news. I also know of quite a few 10-12 year old boys who regularly make Michael Jackson/pedophile jokes amongst themselves which lets me know that at the very least they are aware of sexual predators. If the best we can do is to have Michael Jackson and pedophile officially listed as synonyms and Jackson officially crowned as the King of Pedophiles/pedophile jokes, at least we know that children have the profile of one down pat. The part about teaching kids that they look like everyone else is a lesson for another day, and another trial. I can't begin to tell you how many stories of abuse I heard along the way. Whenever I mentioned what I was doing, there was always someone with their own story to tell. Many of them told me they had never told anyone before. In divulging their secret, they felt better. A small thing, perhaps, but significant nonetheless. When you've carried around a secret for that long, it can be a great relief to unburden yourself. It was all made possible by one boy who had the courage to do what we keep asking our kids to do. TELL SOMEONE. He should be proud of himself. Many lives have been changed and touched.
